Alastair MacBeath Wins 4th High Stakes Backgammon Tournament
The 4th High Stakes Backgammon Tournament took place at Strawberry Hills in Jamaica this past weekend and it was Alastair MacBeath who outlasted the field and took the $315,000 first place prize. It was tough competition and MacBeath had to get past William Mahfood before he could claim the victory. Both Mahfood and MacBeath passed the lead back and forth during the match but it was MacBeath who pulled ahead and won the match 15-13. MacBeath was down 0-3 when play began but a few good rolls put him ahead and he ended the tournament with a five game winning streak.
Though MacBeath gained the lead, Mahfood would fight right back and bring the score to 13-11 in his favor but MacBeath was not done for the day and he came back to win the match 15-13. Mahfood earned $180,000 for second place while Greg Mcclure won third place and a prize of $72,000.
MacBeath commented on the tournament stating: “It was a great tournament… what was also great was that a lot of people we expected to figure prominently didn’t and we saw a lot of new players doing really well.”
