Kingston International 2013 Backgammon Tournament ResultsThe 2013 edition of the Kingston International Backgammon tournament is complete and Kynan Cooke has earned the first place finish of the Sterling Asset Management event. The tournament took place at the Spanish Court Hotel and Cooke was able to defeat Billy West in the finals to earn the first place finish. On the women’s side, it was Marie Legualt who earned the title defeating fellow player Nikki Franklin I the finals.
Players traveled from across the globe to participate in the event including the champion from last year, Alastair MacBeath. MacBeath won the event last year and defeated Eddie Azan during the first round of competition.
The event was the beginning of the new backgammon season and the next tournament to take place will be in November with the Strawberry Hill Hotel and Spa hosting the event. The Golden Eye will host the next event in February 2014 while mini tournaments will take place weekly thanks to the Jamaica Backgammon Association.
The current event saw thirty players competing and Andrew Issa, the CEO of Coldwell Banker one of the sponsors of the event stated that the event was a success for the past two years to indicate that the tournament will be a permanent fixture for the Kingston and Spanish Court Hotel. Issa stated: “Getting high interest in the women’s tournament is definitely a sign that more people want to play and are willing to compete.”
Kevin Richards, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Sterling Asset Management, attended the event and drew the women’s tournament matchups and stated that Sterling is involved with the backgammon tournament because of the intensity of the game. Richards stated: “It actually isn’t terribly different from what we do in investments. It’s about having the right strategy.” Which the winners of the event obviously had!
