Michael Hirst Wins Strawberry Hill Backgammon CompetitionThe Strawberry Hill High Stakes Backgammon tournament took place just a few days ago and it was Michael Hirst who managed to win the event. Hirst has been playing backgammon for thirty years and his hard work certainly paid off.
Hirst beat Andrew Issa in the finals 15-12 to take home the first place trophy and the $455,000 prize. Hirst also won airline tickets to London from Virgin Atlantic as well as a weekend for two at Island Outpost properties. He also won a six month membership at Gymkhana and a Sony Ericsson W810 telephone from Digicel.
Hirst was losing to Issa by four points before he tied it up 12-12 and then took the lead. Hirst commented: “in backgammon terms, I built a board against him, so I left him with difficult opportunities.”
Issa commented that he got a little deflated and a little tired at one point during the competition. He let up on the game and then lost his concentration. Issa earned $260,000 for his second place finish. Third went to Ruddy Armstrong who earned $104,000 while Johnny Todd took fourth place with $78,000.
